The Wichita Senior Chapter recognized several student projects for Presentation in Resource Management at the WSU Engineering Open House on April 3 & 4, 2003. Judges were Sandy Wilson, CPIM, Brian Maschino, CPIM, and myself. As you may know, Sandy was heavily involved during her term as President-elect in starting the WSU Student Chapter. Brian, a part time student at WSU, is currently serving on the board as Student Chapter Coordinator. Both are Past-Presidents. Top honors went to the student team of Tony Pheng {group leader}, Marki Farris and Augustine Nguyen for their excellent booth on Capacity Analysis And Improvement at Air Capitol Plating. Their narrative in the Engineering Open House program read: "Air Capitol Plating is a processing plant for many manufacturers of aircraft parts. Its many services included inspection, non-destructive testing, plating, and painting. Currently, Air Capitol Plating is experiencing difficulties in getting out orders on time to customers. The objectives of this project involve standardizing process times and providing recommendations to improve production flow at the company after assessments have been made." This booth was also selected as Best IE & Mfg E Presentation as well as the Student Chapter's second place. Tony accepted cash awards, including $60 from the senior chapter, on behalf of his team. Second place went to the team of Ginny Youse, Tony Pheng and Sheau-Jy Ong for their booth on Inventory Management At Wend-Wood, Inc. "Wend-Wood, Inc. is an engineer-to-order company that manufactures cabinetry for commercial applications. Wend-Wood is experiencing hardware and material unavailability on the production line. The objective of this project was to reduce the number of inventory shortages. The team utilized the following engineering tools to analyze the current system: process flow diagrams, Pareto anaylsis, cause and effect diagrams, and cost analysis of the current system. It was found that the bulk of the problems center around missing parts, hardware, and liner. Multiple alternatives were developed. These alternatives were evaluated by using value engineering analysis." Tony Pheng {yes, again} accepted the awards, including $50 from the senior chapter, at the banquet. Third place went to the team of Erik Wilmeth {group leader}, Kristina Lem, and Kelly Smith for their booth on Improvements Of The Shipping And Receiving Process Flow. "Improving the process flow at Thayer Aerospace" was described as a solution to getting paperwork matched up with the proper parts in the shipping and receiving department. The team received $40 from the senior chapter. Ron Lunsford, CPIM, President 2002-2003 |
