Main presentation:
BEYOND THE BASICS OF MRP: IS YOUR SYSTEM DRIVING EXCESSIVE REQUIREMENTS?

Date: Thursday, May 5, 2005

Most business planners are aware that MRP is considered to be “The Great Enabler” because it lets us have large lot sizes and poor yield rates by planning for those allowances. In the ideal JIT/Lean environment, we would use lot-for-lot ordering (only as-needed qty’s) and have 100% yields. Recognizing that we might still need to use lot size rules and consider scrap rates in practice, it is possible that we do not need to consider both factors. Further, standard MRP planning considers the lot size rule to be applied to the order completion (receipt) quantity, when for many environments it should apply the lot size rule to the start (release) quantity.

Chances are good that most systems automatically apply the rules based on a system default, and unless anyone has taken a look at this from the perspective Ford will present, then THE SYSTEM IS DRIVING EXCESSIVE REQUIREMENTS!

Participants will learn: • The dramatic effect of applying lot size or yield inappropriately • Where to apply lot size (PO release OR receipt) for their environment • How to use a computer algorithm to optimize MRP processing • How to use an interactive Excel spreadsheet for LIVE MRP SIMULATION!
