Main presentation:
Henry Ford: Return to Service
Henry Ford, or at least his
books, taught the Japanese how to mass-produce automobiles with a high
degree of quality, and in April 2007, Toyota became the world’s largest car
manufacturer – overtaking both General Motors and Ford Motor Company.
Scientific management
practitioners like Taylor and Gilbreth may have established the foundation
for what we now call Lean manufacturing; but, Henry Ford systematized it on
a mass scale. He took the continuous improvement ideology beyond the shop
floor and into the supply chain, thus creating the world’s first lean
enterprise.
Henry Ford was obsessed with
continuous improvement, but; this obsession was only a tool used to support
a more important philosophy he referred to as Service.
It was this philosophy of
Service that led to the 40 hour work week, the $5.00 a day labor wage,
profit based rebates for the Model T, and the steady price reduction on the
Ford built automobiles.
Henry Ford’s political views
reveal a dark side that will forever blemish his contributions to industry
and mass production. However, it is these contributions that are now being
challenged by a new philosophy and business ethic, which has created a
multitude of sociological and economic crises.
By revisiting Henry Ford’s
philosophy on Service, we might again achieve balance in our economy,
industrial base, and personal lives. This presentation will provide
attendees with a brief insight of Henry Ford and his philosophy of service.
