No, Y2K3 is not a typo. I'm referring to 2003. The first year Certification Maintenance comes due. Since August 1997 when Certification Maintenance was first announced, everyone has HAD the opportunity to begin accumulating the requisite points to remain certified. HAS everyone? Probably not. Have you? Let's do a little math. If you are CPIM, you need to accumulate 75 points in a 5 year cycle (except this first cycle since APICS allows you to count any points after August 97). But, to keep it simple lets divide 75 by 5, which equals an average of 15 points per year. Sound like a lot? Not really when you consider the many ways you can earn points. Consider this: If you are a member of a Chapter, you earn 6 points per year. Most Chapters hold 9 Professional Development Meetings (PDMs) a year. The presentation at each PDM typically lasts an hour, which would earn 1 point per PDM. So, if you did NOTHING else but belong to a Chapter and attend each PDM, you could earn 15 points each year. It is December 1999. Using the above example, you COULD have 40 points to your credit (18 points for Chapter membership + 22 points for the PDMs). More if you had served on the Chapter BOD, a standing committee, taught or took any classes dealing with resource management, attended a Region meeting or International Conference, or passed a certification exam. The ways are many. Everyone certified prior to January 1, 1998 has until their certification month in 2003 to accumulate 75 points. Let's use my certification month - July as an example. It is December 1999. If I had no points up to now, I would have to earn almost 22 POINTS PER YEAR in the next 3 ½ years! Is it impossible? NO, but I would have a lot of catching up to do! | ||
