CONFERENCE 2001 APICS International Conference and Exposition a Tremendous Success Despite the tragic events of September 11, the APICS International Conference and Exposition attracted more than 3,100 attendees in San Antonio. The conference was well received by members, international associates, exhibitors, and speakers. San Antonio was the perfect backdrop for the conference, and attendees raved about the caliber of the trade show, educational content, and networking opportunities. Highlights of the conference included 115 educational sessions as well as general session speakers Senator Bob Dole, Rick Butts, and Don Peppers. Attendees enjoyed an outdoor reception at La Villita that led to good times and networking, and they closed the conference dancing and singing along with Los Lobos.

| Student Chapter Report Nov. 19, 2001 The APICS students' chapter took 17 students to the APICS International Conference at San Antonio on October twenty-sixth. The chapter President had a scholarship and helped the conference committee in monitoring the sessions. All the seventeen students worked as volunteers and helped the people at the conference by giving them directions. The sessions helped us to gain insight on the latest advances in Resource management and we also had fun visiting the tourist attractions in San Antonio. Overall it was a very nice trip and it was a welcome break from the routines of school life. The student chapter organized an interesting presentation on "Value Stream Mapping in Aerospace Lean Production Implementation." Mr. Don Blake (Director of Boeing Production Systems) agreed to be the speaker. Mr. Blake introduced us to basics of value stream mapping and lean manufacturing. From the presentation it was clear that the value stream mapping offers a great potential to identify the non-value added activities and areas for improvement. Mr. Blake demonstrated the advantages of value stream mapping by a simple working example of manufacturing buttons. The outcome of this presentation was fruitful. The students were convinced of the advantages of Value stream mapping. |
