| How a Small Company uses "Kaizen Blitzes" to Regain Market Share. Cover story: Industry Week for Growing Companies, March 2000. Submitted by: Dave Everett, Chance Coach, Wichita, KS Synopsis: "Kaizen Blitz" is a small team that meets for two to five days, and makes immediate changes. The emphasis is on fast turnaround because in a small company, taking people off the floor means serious loss of production. |
| . | To make everything happen in just a week requires strategy, preparation, and enforcement. |
Strategy - Workers must understand that they are not improving themselves out of a job. If the company is to be successful, and maintain head count, continual productivity improvement is essential. Preparation - Pre-Kaizen data needs to be collected and delivered before the team's first meeting. Work cell layout or throughput numbers can then be used in the meetings without delays for collection. The more preparation that can be made, the more impact can be made on the floor in the short time span of the meetings. Enforcement - It is easy to revert to old habits. Relapses can be prevented by having someone with authority over the work centers as part of the Kaizen team. Someone, who can ensure that changes stay in place and say, "No we aren't going backwards." |
