President's Corner by Steve Plaster, CPIM
apics
Greetings to you all! I hope that all of you have had a productive and successful summer. I am excited about the APICS year ahead and I appreciate the opportunity you have given me to serve you. We begin the year with a motivated board of directors and I would like to welcome the board newcomers: Scott Gepner, CPIM - VP Education; Rita Russell - VP Public Relations; Andrew LeRoux, CPIM - Secretary. In addition, Ron Lunsford, CPIM, is our President Elect as well as interim VP Membership; Margaret Christian is returning as VP Programs; Ron Kammerrer, CPIM, CIRM, is serving as treasurer; Kathy Powell is our Member At Large for Corporate Members; Brian Maschino, CPIM, is Member at Large for Student Chapter; and Kate Keltz, CPIM, is our Past President. I would like to thank each of these volunteers for committing their time and energies in supporting your chapter. The position of VP Membership is in need of a permanent volunteer. If you would like to receive the many benefits of working on this excellent APICS’s board, please contact me at steveofapics@prodigy.net or 651-5718 (h).

I have had a wonderful opportunity this past half year to work with and get to know several groups of young, talented, and motivated individuals by leading CPIM certification workshops. This current group of Resource Management Professionals provides great hope for our local businesses. APICS is an important resource for each of us not only in developing our own skills, but in providing a tried and tested education for the employees upon whom we are building the future of our companies. Schedulers, Buyers, Customer Service Representatives, Production Managers, Shop Supervisors, and Stockroom Managers are among the cross section of learners that your companies are sending to APICS for this valuable education. Each one of these positions make critical decisions which affect our businesses bottom lines on a daily basis. And each one of these positions must work together as a part of an integrated team focused upon the strategic goals of our business if we are to realize our fullest potential and remain ahead of the competition.

APICS has added a new program, called the "Fundamental of Material Management," to the broad range of educational opportunities already available. Fundamentals is designed to provide education, without the pressures of certification, to your employees who are beginning to get involved in resource management but are not yet ready to try for certification. Only through understanding can employees be expected to contribute their maximum. If you would like to get a sample of this program, mark November 13 on your calendar. The November Professional Development Meeting will be dedicated to presenting a portion of the Fundamental of Inventory Management to introduce this important program to you and your companies. Bring a group of your resource management employees to learn more about the Fundamentals of Inventory Management. Or contact Scott Gepner - (316) 676-6771, to discuss options for bringing the full program to your employees. The board is working on determining the deployment for this program and the more input we receive from the chapter members, the more successful we will be.

And of course mark September 11 on your calendars, as that is the date of our first Professional Development Meeting. Margaret Christian, VP Programs is working hard to bring you topical sessions throughout the year that will meet your development needs and the needs of your businesses. And of course on a selfish note, I want to learn from you. The greatest opportunity we offer as a chapter is the opportunity to network together before and after the meeting. I look forward to serving you this year as President and especially look forward to meeting each of you at the September Professional Development Meeting (PDM). Remember that each PDM is worth 1 CPIM Maintenance point, and CPIM Maintenance is due at the end of 2002.
